Original Name - Muralidhar Devidas Amte

Muralidhar Wavedas Amte is an Indian social activist who works for the empowerment of lepers, disabled and marginalized sections of the society. He is known by the alias Baba Amte. After completing his law studies at Wardha World College, Amte dedicated his life to serving the underprivileged. Born into a wealthy family, he recognized the suffering and neglect of lepers and gave up his luxury and built hospitals and ashrams for lepers. He made efforts to make the lepers self-sufficient and rehabilitate them. On August 15, 1949, he founded a hospital in Anandwan and in 1973, founded the Lok Biradri Prakalp for the tribes of Madiagond.

Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's words and philosophy, he quit law school and joined the Indian independence movement. He was greatly influenced by the Quit India Movement of 1942 and the War of Independence. He was very sympathetic to Gandhian ideas and lived a very simple life. He began his life-long Khadi which he used to visit the Sevagram Ashram. Upon learning of his life's purpose, Gandhi named him "Abhay Sadhak", meaning "fearless investigator".

He was passionate about ecological balance and wildlife conservation. He was a key participant in the Knight India movement. He was awarded the Padma Shri Award in 1971 and Padma Bhushan in 1986. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Gandhi Peace Prize, the Magsaysay Award, the Templeton Award and the Jamnalal Bajaj Award.
